The Public Council of ROSATOM approved its Environmental Policy

On the 17th of October 2017 in Moscow ROSATOM held a meeting of its Public Council on implementation of measures of the Year of Ecology in Nuclear Industry.

“Nuclear power is viewed as the key sector in low-carbon economy development,” Sergei Donskoiy, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, noted in his address. The Ministry and ROSATOM, within the framework of the established regulations, strive to improve the effectiveness of our interaction and search for new formats”.

Director General of ROSATOM Alexei Likhachev said: “I would like to note that in the Year of Ecology we have implemented a number of important measures. Two large-scale environmental projects are running in Kola Peninsula. First, we are completing the pilot project on cleaning the bay of sank and drowned objects which play negative to marine environment. We hope to continue this program. We are to recover 102 objects. Second, this year we have started shipping off spent nuclear fuel from vessels in Andreeva Bay. We started this work in June after 17 years of preparations. We are to ship off 22,000 fuel assemblies. The first batch was already delivered to PA Mayak for reprocessing. The second rail train will leave before the end of the year.”The consideration of the draft updated Uniform Sectoral Environmental Policy of ROSATOM and its organizations was the key issue of the meeting. In presence of Sergei Donskoiy and Head of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Maksim Yakovenko the Public Council members approved a new version of the sectoral strategic document in the field of ecologic safety and environmental protection. It was noted that the draft Environmental Policy had been approved by the Public Council of the Russian Federation.

The members of the Public Council discussed and outlined new interaction formats of ROSATOM and Minprirody, areas of ROSATOM’s interaction with the expert ecological community, and approved mechanisms of advancing skills of the sectoral employees responsible for preparation of documents to be reviewed by the State Ecological Expert Review.
